Considered Consumption Curators
Hello, welcome to The Obsessive where we believe in the joy of Considered Consumption, not Conspicuous Consumption (Thorstein Veblen: The theory of the leisure class 1899).
Considered Consumption is the purchasing behaviour of researching and buying the informed choice of product or service; that which is considered to be the best in class, or recognised for its authenticity, originality, heritage and how cool it is.
Here at The Obsessive we believe in buy best buy once. Buying the right thing can be difficult. The Obsessive researches products and services…and we recommend our choice. Importantly, we mostly own the products we feature and will only recommended products if we approve of them, not because the marketing department have sent them to us or has paid us to review their products.
We want to build a community of like minded people who care where their purchases are made and who by. A community who believes and values quality products and services.
Our site will help you ensure that you invest your hard earned cash in the right stuff. We’ll help you curate your life. Because we all want to live the good life.
A life long passion
The Obsessive founder, Jonathan has always been…obsessive. He must have been the only child in England with a bespoke leather cowboy belt and gun holsters that his Grandfather made for him. Since then he’s been pre-occupied with having the right thing. This search for what's the 'right one' to buy requires an enthusiastic search for information to discover the back story or the why of pretty much everything he does.
This obsessive tendency continues to drive him in his advertising career. He's worked at some of the best agencies, on some of the greatest brands in the world; such as Nike, adidas, Honda and Ford. The Obsessive web site is the manifestation of this madness.
Our identity
The Obsessive identity was lovingly crafted by Bryan Edmondson, a British graphic designer and founder of the renowned design consultancy SEA. The wordmark is set in Futura Extra Bold, designed by Paul Renner in 1927, with the dot over the lowercase i (‘tittle' as commonly known) highlighted in red and used to denote a specific object of desire in the obsessive archives.
Our chosen font for primary type is Sabon, designed in the 1960s by Jan Tschichold. A German calligrapher, typographer and book designer, he worked alongside British typographer, Ruari McLean, on the design of Penguin Books (1947–1949),developing a standardised practice for creating the covers for all of the books produced
