Less is more, as legendary architect Mies van der Rohe claimed, and this statement is absolutely applicable to the Gomi Power Bank which is, in their words, 'handcrafted from waste’.

Range anxiety is a term often used when referring to driving an EV, but the real sufferers from this condition are people who rely on their phones all day. A case in point: I’d been experiencing range anxiety on my trips into central London, so I decided to invest in a power bank. Naturally I chose a well-known, expensive electrical brand. But the product turned out to be poorly designed, too fat to be truly portable and, worst of all, it held very little charge. I also noticed that it got alarmingly hot. I was grateful I’d bought it online from Argos when they emailed me with a product recall notification.

So, not only was it expensive, but it was rubbish too.

It was only then that I found out about Gomi – or rather the Instagram algorithm served me one of their ads. And what an amazing innovative brand Gomi is. They take plastic waste destined for landfill and use it creatively to build the power bank’s case, while repurposing e-bike batteries for the power unit itself. It’s a brilliantly simple product, compact and nothing fancy. It’s just really good at being a power bank.

Designed and built by a small team based in Brighton, they use the term 'circular lifespans' to describe their business philosophy, which is essentially that all tech should be reusable. The power bank comes with a two-year warranty and repairs for life. They really don’t want you to ever throw any of their products away.

Of course, I opted to buy the slightly more expensive Paul Smith collaboration version of the power bank, which I can highly recommend. I also think Mies would approve.
