Old Fashioned.

This cocktail comes with a health warning: it is a little devil of a drink. The “Old Fashioned” is arguably the simplest, most basic version of the whisky cocktail. It is, quite literally, the Old Fashioned version. It’s easy to make too, as it is essentially just bourbon or rye whiskey with some simple syrup or sugar, plus a dash of bitters.

We’ve used Jack Daniel's Single Barrel Select whiskey and added simple syrup, which takes the edge and heat off the whiskey’s flavour. Then we added classic Angostura Bitters to temper the syrup’s extra sweetness, while adding to the depth of flavour.

Ingredients:

1 teaspoon simple syrup (half a pony)
3 dashes Angostura bitters
1.5 measure of bourbon (or rye whiskey, if preferred)
1 thick strip of orange peel
1 large ice cube

Instructions:

Twist the orange peel and rub it around the inside of the glass, then leave it in the glass
Add a large ice cube
Add the simple syrup and bitters
Add the bourbon (or rye whisky)
Stir gently until well mixed and ice cold
