Oud to
Tom Ford.
By Jonathan Campbell
I have an obsession with Tom Ford Parfum. Each scent is different and strong. There’s a scent for every mood and occasion. I find myself moving through the range as the seasons change. Dare I say it, these scents are all sexy, which is really Mr Ford’s true strength. Everything he makes is desirable […]
Smelling good is important. My first aftershave was the original Eau Savage, a light summer scent. I never really got on with it as it was so subtle - and as a young man, subtle was definitely not for me. Things soon escalated with Paco Rabanne, Jazz and Kouros, all of which had very strong distinctive scents. Contrary to all advice, I’d pretty much bathe myself in them.
Naturally, I wanted to make girls remember me. Now, despite my youthful exuberance, it turns out I was thinking along the right lines. Science tell us that if you smell good, people will always associate that nice smell with you - and remember you positively as a result.
Obviously, I’m no expert, but the basic theory goes something like this: your nose draws the scent up to the olfactory bulb at the front of your brain, which quickly sends the signal to your limbic system, which includes the amygdala and the hippocampus. These regions are highly involved in emotion and memory - which means that a good memory can be locked in with a pleasant scent.
Fast forward a few decades and today, I am obsessed with Tom Ford Parfum. Each scent is different. Bold and strong, they are far from recessive. They brim with emotion and purpose, and there’s a scent for every mood and occasion. I find myself moving through the range as the seasons change – I even have a favourite beach aftershave (Soliel Blanc). Dare I say it, these scents are all sexy, which is really Mr Ford’s true strength. Everything he makes is sexy and irresistibly desirable.
The packaging is distinctive, dark and sensual, much like the scents themselves. I tend to buy the 250ml decanter, as it’s cool and unlike anything else on the market. It’s also the best value for money. With a pipette you can decant the scent into an atomiser, which you can then use to distribute all around your body. But remember not to rub it in, as that will change the way it develops on your skin.
I even like to dab Lavender Extreme on myself before bed to help me sleep and still smell amazing in the morning. The one that started this particular obsession, however – and the one I use the most as it’s a wonderful winter scent – is Oud Wood. I’ve had both men and women stop me on the tube and on the street to ask me what I’m wearing. It’s a dark, heady blend of Oud notes, exotic woods and warm amber. For me, it’s the backbone of the collection: a smell so intoxicatingly sensual it will leave a positive memory of you in the mind of whoever you love.
